1- Take a Surfing Lesson: This is sometimes the hardest step as we might want to do it the hard way and may be just rent a surfboard and lear struggling and even having a bas session that coul lead to quit this sport. That´s why the first step for a beginner is signing up for a surf lesson with a reputable surf school or instructor in Cabo San Lucas.

We recommend personalized lesson when you are just starting to make you feel really confortable and be there for every moment helping you and coaching on things to improve. Also one to one provide with confident and zero scared by knowing that you instructor is always next to you and giving you surfing tips.

The main idea is to ecouraged you to grab waves and stand up constantly and feel this conection with the sea and feel the adrenaline of running the wave. Later on once you stand up easily with the instructor help and you already have more strengh in you back and shoulders you can try something different with not that much pushing the board by the surf instructor and paddle the wave on your own while the Instructor tells you wich is a good wave and you can start reading the waves.

2- Select a Suitable Beach: At Cabo San Lucas and Baja California Surf there are several beaches with different surf conditions according to your level and it can vary according the time of the year. From the Sea of Cortez to the Pacifi Ocean the distance from Cabo San Lucas rang from 40 milles to 50 milles away and closer also. From still unspoiled beaches at The East Cape to the Pacific Side we find incredibles beaches for beginner.

If you are taking a Surf Lesson your instructor is going to decide the best suitable beach to go according with the wheather conditions and it´s going to be much easier than if you are just renting a surfboard by your own, but it´s still a chance to do.

3- Rent Proper Equipment: Afforunatly you surf instructor is going to bring the right surfboard and wetsuit if needed. The good thing of Cabo San Lucas is that during april to november we can sur and take lessons on the Sea of Cortez side and water is mostly warm on that time wich can vary if there is the Niña phenomen or Niño wich can lead colder or warmer water temperature. The surfboard you will be using on your surf classes are most of the time foam longboard that not only float a lot and give you more balance but also avoid hurting if you get hit by the surfboard as the foam material is really soft. Later on once you fell more confident after a few lessons you could try a fiber longboard and feel the difference but it still has good buoyancy and balance.

If you choose renting your own gear and you are a begginer remember the foam longboard is the best option for the reasons above and olse make sure the leash that holds your ancle need to be in proper shape to not lose the surfboard that keeps you floating.

Starting with a shortboard takes most of the time longer practices period and you should try it once you get on another level where you have not only more strengh but excelent balance to paddle and popup.

4- Learn Water Safety: Geting into the water can be easy and sometimes getting out could no be if you don´t know how the shore tides and rip tides work. But don´t worry with a surfboard you are always floating and it´s your safety device not to drawn in the worst scenario. You can ask to your surf instructor or a lifeguard at the beach about it to know the hazzards.

But still a short introduction can help you to understand a few things. If there is no people on one part of the beach could be for a reason such as the good waves are not breaking there and are not proper for surfing and you probably should not get in there. Keep in mind that rip tides work always the same way, As thi rip tide pull you in very easy it gets a point where there is no more ripe tide and then you should swim paralell to the beach and then just swim toward the beach on a different area where the you were pulled in, either left or right, but never try to go out to the beach through the rip tide.

Understanding the tides cicly is crucial as aproximatly every 6 hours they come up and down, but two hours before it get hight tide, waves can start getting bigger specially when the swell on that day is big. On the low tide there are less chances to have bigger waves as there is a moment of calm but be carefull with reef brakes when there is low tide no to step on any seaurgeans.

Try to keep your surfboard always with you as it keeps you floating, but if for any reason you let you surfboard going with a wave, try to adopt a baby position covering your head.

5- Paddling Practice: Some people might be swimmers and some others could not be very sportive but still even the mos fit person could have issues with the paddling balance and it could take time and practice to master paddling habilities. Once you fell confortable paddling in calm waters, you can easily turn left or right while paddling you could attemp to catch some waves. Also getting paddling strengh is crucial. At the beginning we can fell no strengh and we want to give up but it takes a lot of practice to get good back and shoulders. But still don´t worry because at the beginning there is not best way to push you on the back your surfboard to help you and fell riding the wave.

6- Small Waves No Fear: Nothing more smart and intelligent than going slow to gain confidence and not getting fear for bad moments on bigger waves. You don´t want to have a bad surf session because if you get caught in fear then it´s harder to take it off. We go always from zero to a one, but no to hero. Be smart and surf will always be fun.

7- Practice make master surfers: Practice and patient is the key, small consistent steps and you will be riding next to some other experienced surfers if you have time to practice as much as you can. In any discipline, not only in sports, as longer you do try and learn the more confident you will become and more confortable and amzing surf sessions you are going to have.

8- Observe Experienced Surfers: as obvious is sounds, nothing as true as this. When we see some experienced surfers how they get one wave after another that talk about how they can read and understand the waves, where they brake and where they are running two. It´s key to see how they are positioning on the wave to get the right part of it or understand what waves are not good enough to for it. A good practice also from good surfers is when they got one wave they wait a little to some other get some waves before going back to the first lineup position.

9- Stay Safe: This has to be always on your mind as your top priority and not only to avoid any life threathening but mainly to go slow with no fear connection to the waves and bad experiences. Staying safe means that you have to know your limits and from there keep a steady constant pase, be caution when the weather conditions are not the right one for one and don´t be shy to ask another surfers for recommendations.
