If you are planning a trip to Cabo San Lucas and you want to experience the surf culture of Baja California Sur, the southest tip of the Peninsula, you should know some of the best surfing spots for your experience and level or the best surf instructor if you just want to experience this sport for your first time.
In this area it´s possible to surf in the Pacific side where the hole year we have waves and can be stronger sea when it gets big or at the Sea of Cortez where still during the summer the waves can be very consistent as the Pacific side but it could be softer but really good conditions for beginners, intermediate and experienced surfers. We have mainly right waves in all this area considering the angles of the beach in the Baja Peninsula but sometimes you can manage some spots to get left one by your own.

1- Cerritos Beach: Where beginners find their bliss
On the Pacific side about 40 miles from Cabo San Lucas there is this surf town and an incredible beach breack where you can learn on a nice sandy bottom with your instructor and later on move to a more open area with left and rights waves. Waves can be from 2 to 3 feet and easy to paddle in and it can get like 10 feet may be just a few times a year with big swells but you need to be very strong and trained to paddle in when it gets like that. But most of the time is a fast beach break.
2- Monuments Beach;
This break point is the only one located in Cabo San Lucas next to Medano beach. It´s a small surfing area for intermediate to advanced surfers and it´s a rocky bottom and easy to get seaurgin stucked in your foot if you go in low tide or if you don´t know how to surf. It´s a left hand wave and it can get 8 feet when it gets big and it´s really strong and short ride but very intense. The adrenaline while paddleing in is high as you can see many big rocks specially when you are padleing to ride the wave. During the winter from novermber or december to april it can be the only surf sport on the Sea of Cortez side with still a very small wave but not that far away like Cerritos. When the rest of the spots are big you probable don´t want to be surfing Monuments unless you are really strong paddler and secure of your surfing conditions.
3- El Tule: Where Local Nature Reigns Supreme
In the Corridor area beetwen Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo it´s excellent for beginners to intermediate. It´s a rocky area but easy to surf and learn. It´s not really consistent every day but it´s an everyday beach to surf with easy right waves. When a storm is coming the waves kind like close and are not easy to surf but you can have a really good time surfing here and good vibes with most of local people. It´s a dog friendly beach and easy to access by car nest to the sea.
4- Costa Azul: Where progression takes flight
In the middle of San Jose del Cabo this area haves different breaks for longboard and shortboards and some of them can be perfect for learning. Old Man´s or Acapulquito is more suitable for longboarders and begginers where we like to teach for the smooth and easy waves. It can´t get a crowded like most of Costa Azul for being the center of surfing in San Jose with easy access and close to the downtown. It´s break point with a slow right hand wave and a rocky bottom.
5- The Rock:
It´s another reef break next to Old Man´s breaking on sharp rocks but this right hand wave is faster and excellent for intermediate to advanced surfers. It get´s really crowded like everywhere in Costa Azul and you should avoid surfing on low tide when the rocks are coming out close to the surface. With big swells it can reach 8 feet and it´s normal to have 3 to 5 feet waves during the summer. Still you can always get better chances to surf with less people if you like the noon sun where most of surfers prefer to be with the AC at taking a break.
6- Zippers; Where Leyends Are Made
This right hand reef break can be a powerfull and fast wave specially with big swells it can create perfect paralell lines coming close to the shore. It´s better por intermediate to advanced surfers. It´s quiet rocky bottom like all Costa Azul. The access to this beach is the easiest as the parking area is right there.
7- La Fortuna:
Located at the East Cape on the Sea of Cortez, like 40 minutos from San Jose del Cabo. The last part of the road is dirt road like 8 miles and you can sea an amazing landscape to the sea with turquese clear water. There is rock coming out of the water at this reef breack where you wait for the wave. It´s a right hand wave like most surf spot in Baja Sur and is very friendly for every level except when it gets bigger on big swells when it gets like 8 feet high. It´s not a very fast wave and it gives time to play on it but it can be very solid and all the bottom is rocky, so be carefull with the low tide.
8-Shipwrechs; A Hidden Gem
It´s the first good reefbreak you can surf when getting into the East Cape. You can park the car next to this really unspoiled white sand beaches and right hand wave it´s really good quality whith the right swell. The lines you can see from the road above the beach are amazing. There are waves from 3 to 8 feet when it gets big. It´s a surf point for intermedita to advanced and the wave have fast seccions specially at the beginning of the ride while getting above the rocks. Its everywhere rocks so try to go in with high tide to mid low tide to avoid getting hit with rocks. There is also on this beach on the left side looking at the sea another breack where you can ride a left one, it´s more sandy bottom except where you catch the wave but it works most of the times when the the swell has more size.
9- Nine Palms:
It´s the farthes of from this breaks at the East Cape, probabley 15 more minutos from La Fortuna. It´s another rocky reef break with different areas to catch the wave and it makes it possible also for begginers in the fist break, and intermediate to advanced farther on the other reef break but when the weves get bigger you can ride the hole seccions close to the beach. You will be trying to avoid the different rocks that come out will riding the wave all the time, especially when the tide it´s getting lower. The seccions can be very fun from the fast dropp on the advanced point to a more smoothly seccion at the begginer area where it gives more time to play on it. Definitly a beach to go camping like many people go with their campers and stay for many weeks.
